Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 in Wine

I have so many fond memories of the first Roller Coaster Tycoon so I decided to get it running under wine. Unfortunately it doesn’t run with out a little tweaking, but it runs great after that. Note: this is only for the US release.

If you have an ISO image of the game (hmmm, I wonder where you got that from…) then you’ll need to mount it first. You can do that like this:

% sudo modprobe loop
% sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop /path/to/rct.iso /media/cd

After that navigate to where you mounted your CD/ISO and run Setup.exe “eg. wine Setup.exe”. Go with the full installation and wait for it to finish. When it’s done it will prompt you the run the game. If you do you’ll notice that none of the buttons work properly. They all bring you back to the main menu. You’ll have to install the 1.08.187 patch which you can find here.

Well now that we’ve done that the game might not even work anymore. The solution is to use a native dplayx.dll. Copy if from the directx folder of your Roller Coaster Tycoon CD to your installation directory. Then run winecfg and add it as a native dll in the Libraries tab (you’ll probably want to do this for only rct.exe only). After that just run rtc.exe and you’ll be set.

The first rollercoaster tycoon still rocks and works great in wine . I only have a bit lag but i might try your solution :)

If it’s already working then this will not fix the lag. This is what I had to do to get it running in the first place. If you have performance issues then the dplayx.dll might help. You could also try using “nice -n 20 wine rct.exe”. That always works with any slowdown I have with Starcraft.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, which is basically the same game with the engine, but with more roller coasters and rides runs flawlessly in wine on Arch and Linux Mint.
