A Bing search led me to your excellent post. I've been trying to learn git-style branching in Mercurial for a long time. Most advice comes from Mercurial users, and they're a little less than candid about how their proposed solutions actually compare with git. Making a clone for a new feature seems like the way to go.

I'm letting out a sigh because I can't find the perfect system for me. I like branching in git, but I like Mercurial's philosophy that history is sacred. I'm also a Windows developer, and I don't like how git relies on a suite of GNU userland utilities. Git on Windows includes a host of supporting programs which makes it seem like I'm on UNIX. I prefer Windows, and if I wanted to be on UNIX I would be. Mercurial's Windows support is very nice. So is Bazaar's. Colocated branches in Bazaar seem pretty close to git's model, but it's not clear that their use is encouraged.
