Hi. I just noticed your post. Lyx is a front-end to Latex, which makes using Latex easier and user friendly. I would suggest Lyx if you dont already know Latex.

I am looking for a word processor for my PhD thesis in Earth sciences. Two well-wishers have referred me to LyX and Latex. I am now a bit confused - are the two programns different? If not, which one is the most recent and user-friendly of the two. have no experience in using any of the two programs and I am not a computer geek. I urgently need something that will give my thesis a good professional outlook with minimum hassles.

Any quick pointers please!
