I can't see the benefit for Canonical. This extension it's not something like MySQL, than could support a dual licensing model. The number of patents, copyrights and trademarks is interesting for possible investors. I would assume Canonical choosed to be present in stock markets as a source of financing (which has also it's cons, a good example of success outside that twisted system comes from the german BOSCH), so having copyrights, patents and other wicked stuff is good for them in order to keep them being attractive to possible investors. That's not something that obscure or ununderstandable. Remember that Canonical is a company present on the stock exchange markets.
