What are you smoking? All proprietary software, free software and open source software is copyrighted, thanks to the Berne convention.

If you mean proprietary instead of copyrighted, you would be wrong there too, it is all GPLv3:

Any piece of code is under copyright, you mean that Canonical requires to own the copyright of all the code in the project, and that's why you have to assign the copyright of your contributions to Canonical.

I can't see the benefit for Canonical. This extension it's not something like MySQL, than could support a dual licensing model.

Canonical appears to be proposing the most interesting bit of 'uTouch' to X.org:

http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2010-August/012037.html

which is good. If it becomes part of X.org, there won't be any copyright assignment stuff.

What they don't appear to be upstreaming to anywhere, and hence will likely stay a 'Canonical project' hosted at Launchpad with copyright assignment required, is an abstraction layer *on top of* the X extension, called utouch-geis - the intent being to allow the X extension's API to change and handle that in the geis abstraction layer so apps built on top of geis won't have to change.

How significant that turns out to be depends if people build on top of geis or directly on the X extension (or a geis alternative), I guess.

Remember that Canonical is a company present on the stock exchange markets. The number of patents, copyrights and trademarks is interesting for possible investors. I would assume Canonical choosed to be present in stock markets as a source of financing (which has also it's cons, a good example of success outside that twisted system comes from the german BOSCH), so having copyrights, patents and other wicked stuff is good for them in order to keep them being attractive to possible investors.

That's not something that obscure or ununderstandable.

In the light of the Oracle vs Google affair, even with Canonical good will, we cannot be sure than some big corporations will not buy them one day and decide to act like Oracle.

> Seems as though they will put a copyright on this new technology

You do realize that all authors or FOSS have a copyright on those, right?

I guess you meant copyright assignment (which is a very different beast), but 5 times seemed like a lot for a typo.

You would be very welcome in the Fedora translation/keyboard test day so we could make all these spins and remixes better for Arabic:

Hello,

I am one of the people behind ojuba project.
We are happy and proud to base our arabic distro on Fedora. We are also in continuous touch with fedora people, in terms of bugs and issue fixing, of course along with the upstream.

Looking forward to your help and feedback as well.

Best Regards,
- Kefah.

Maybe you'll face some packages which have the WAQF license which isn't acceptably by fedora.
Good luck :)

Well for example its better that Fedora Project organize the content into 3 categories How-To's/Tutorials, Fedora Sub-Projects(content that is for internal use with the Infrastructure team) for example, and then Main Documentation things like the "How do I get involved" "Join the Fedora Project" "Interact with the Fedora Community". If you look at this https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_Project_Wiki. So thats my 3 main areas where everything could be put under. As far as the users personal pages i guess we could put that in a fourth area. What do you think.
